Vincent van Gogh painted "Irises" in the year 1889, one year before his death. He modeled it after Japanese wood block prints he was influenced by at the time and thought it was merely a study painting. His brother Theo thought better and entered it into an exhibition and it has been a favorite of the art world and followers of van Gogh's art ever since.
